Mario (マリオ?, Mario) is a fictional plumber, protagonist of the media franchise of the same name. Originally known as Jumpman, it was created in 1981 by Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Being the player character of numerous chapters of the Super Mario series, he is commonly called Super Mario.
Mario is among the most famous characters created by Nintendo, a Japanese company specializing in the videogame field, of which he is considered the mascot, due to his appearances in hundreds of titles of various genres, mostly platformers, where he is characterized by his ability in jumping and for its transformations. As of March 2011, over 262 million video games featuring Mario as the protagonist had been sold. The mustachioed plumber's first appearance was as the hero of the arcade game Donkey Kong. Brother Luigi was introduced in 1983 in Mario Bros., and other fictional characters have been added to his adventures over time.
